Kitsap Transit is spending $300,000 just for the consultant for the business plan for the Cross Sound ferry service. Mayor Becky Erickson of Poulsbo and Mayor Tim Mathes of Port Orchard had it right and voted “no,” but the rest of the board voted “yes.”
The millions of dollars we have spent on research for the new passenger-only ferry are coming right out of our pockets. Do not believe that other people are paying for all of it or that the government has a source of money other than, us, the taxpayers.
Every passenger that rides it takes money out of the state ferry run. How long before the state decides to cancel the Bremerton to Seattle car ferry because we have a boat and they can cut their costs? How long before Kitsap County will need to raise the sales tax to pay for this small boat?
Think of all of this before getting too excited about Kitsap Transit owning a boat and getting into the ferry business. We have very limited bus service around the county and that should be our priority.
