The Clear Creek Task Force celebrated National Trails Day in a big way. We hosted lots of great activities for kids and joined with other groups to improve our community. It was that special combination of rewarding hard work and fun that made this Trails Day one to remember.

The kids’ events are always fun and full of surprises. The weather didn’t help the turnout, but Amanda was able to get her First-Time Hiker Award. Kids painted fish and walked around with their special “binoculars” looking at stuff. The Audubon Society was out to point out feathered friends along Clear Creek.

We had a great turnout of Mountaineers and Navy folks who came out to clear blackberries and Scotch broom out of the Old Mill Site Park and on the trail. They were helped by the Kiwanis and other folks who just came to pitch in. We got a special boost when Dan Larson and his Alternative to Detention kids showed up. They were very focused and hard working. As always, they are a great asset to our trail efforts. The Great Peninsula Conservancy hosted the event at Old Mill as they were instrumental in its acquisition. As always, county parks supported the event and will haul out all the trash that was collected.

We love it when the community pulls together like this. While our Task Force guys don’t like to toot their horn, I have to tell you that they put out lots of effort to make the day memorable.
