After almost two years of construction, and a three-month delay to open, the ribbon for Silverdale’s Greaves Way got the green light Wednesday afternoon.

The $13 million project, intended to alleviate traffic congestion, is Central Kitsap’s first new road project since 1994.

“We don’t get to open a new road every day,” said County Commissioner Josh Brown. “It’s a big deal.”

The road extends Waaga Way to connect Clear Creek and Old Frontier roads to allow motorists a path to East Bremerton while avoiding the traffic in Silverdale.

The project will also open up the area for development, said Doug Bear, spokesman for the county Public Works Department.

The road was supposed to open in November, but problems with asphalt pushed back the opening date.

The road was named in honor of the Greaves family, whose roots in the community date back to 1894
