Bicycle rodeos prom0te safe bicycling and family fun

POULSBO — With warmer weather, more bicyclists are back on the road. Learn basic rules of the road and pick up some new bicycling skills at upcoming bicycle safety rodeos.

Safety officials say most bicycling injuries are preventable. Simply wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce the odds of a head injury by 50 percent. That’s why north-end Kiwanians are teaming up with the Poulsbo Fire Department, North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office to offer free bicycle safety rodeos.

Have fun from 9 a.m. to noon April 29 at Poulsbo Elementary School, and from 1-4 p.m. May 7 at Kingston’s Village Green. Poulsbo and Kingston Kiwanis clubs will stage bicycle rodeos where participants can learn new techniques, practice bike safety skills and enjoy family and community interaction.

Each event will begin with a bicycle safety video and information provided by a League of American Bicyclists-certified instructor. If you already have a bike helmet, bring it for a professional fitting. If you need a new one, low-cost helmets will be available for purchase.

Whether you have been biking for just one year or for 80 years, new skills can be learned. It’s a great time for parents to have fun with children, and Kiwanis encourages parental participation.
