Three mother-daughter teams participated in Kitsap Mall’s first-ever Mother’s Day makeover contest and all three teams are pleased with the moms’ new looks.
Team Tiefer, Team Markus/Pealstrom and Team Briggs were given $450 Kitsap Mall gift cards and the daughters had one week to give their moms a complete makeover.
We chatted with the teams April 24 at Kitsap Mall in Silverdale when the moms revealed their new looks for the first time.
Team Tiefer
Libbey Tiefer, of Brownsville, took her 16-year-old daughter Bryce Anne out of school for a bit to sign up for the makeover contest at Kitsap Mall.
“My neighbor called and said ‘you guys should do this,'” Libbey said.
Libbey said she trusted Bryce Anne to pick out her new wardrobe and the team spent almost all of the $450. The team purchased a shirt, cardigan, skirt, a few pairs of shoes, makeup, jewelry and even a black evening gown for mom’s makeover.
“I really like the shoes we bought,” Libbey said.
Libbey, a mother of two, said it was a big change for her because she doesn’t wear makeup and usually pulls her hair back into a ponytail, but she trusted Bryce Anne to give her a new look from head to toe.
“I liked her style,” Libbey said.
“I just kind of went with what I liked,” Bryce Anne added.
Libbey said she is so used to buying things for her family that it was hard to shop for herself for once.
“It was a complete role reversal,” she said.
Libbey said she tried to pick out a dress herself during the makeover shopping experience, but Bryce Anne quickly told her no and chose what she thought would look great on her mom.
“She did everything,” Libbey said with a smile.
Libbey said she loves her new look and plans to stick with it.
Team Markus/Pealstrom
Chalice Markus and her daughter Cynthia Pealstrom live next door to each other in Bremerton.
Pealstrom said when she learned of the makeover contest, she knew she and her mother had to participate.
“I called her and said ‘meet me at the mall now,'” Pealstrom laughed.
Markus, a mother of three and grandmother of eight, said she enjoyed sharing the makeover experience with her only daughter.
“It’s something we’ve always really wanted to do,” Pealstrom said. “We wanted to do makeovers together, but this was an opportunity and it was fun.”
Pealstrom said it took about three days to pick out various shirts, pants, shoes and jewelry for her mother and had Markus’ makeup and hair done as well.
“She was a trooper, I have to say that. She tried on everything she was asked … she was a real trooper,” Pealstrom said.
Markus said she loves her hair and even likes the white capris Pealstrom picked out for her.
“I never wear capris,” Markus said.
Markus said she plans to keep her new look, right down to her new hairstyle.
“I’m going to really try. The hair might be a little hard though,” she said with a smile.
Team Briggs
Kate Briggs and her 15-year-old daughter Chelsea, of Bremerton, were the last team to sign up for the Mother’s Day makeover contest and both are glad they were able to participate.
“She does a lot for me and I wanted to change her look,” Chelsea said. “I wanted to make her feel pretty.”
Kate, a mother of three, said she and Chelsea did most of the wardrobe shopping in one day. Chelsea selected a couple outfits, pairs of shoes, a purse and wallet for her mother.
“(Chelsea) had a huge say on everything we bought,” Kate said.
Kate even had most of her hair chopped off and styled at Trade Secret.
She said it was hard to fathom spending $450 all on herself, but she and Chelsea managed to do it.
“The first $89 I spent in a store I had to go home. I about had a panic attack,” Kate said.
Kate liked her black skirt and shirt outfit a lot. She said it was a big change for her because the last time she wore a skirt or dress it was her wedding day.
“I’m in a dress,” Kate laughed.
She said she’s pleased with her new hairdo and outfits selected by Chelsea and plans to wear her new clothes whenever and wherever she can.
“I’m extremely happy,” Kate said.
The mom with the most votes will receive a $150 Kitsap Mall gift card. The winner will be announced Monday, May 11 at Kitsap Mall and the winning mother-daughter team will be featured in the Friday, May 15 issue.
