You’ll want to attend a wonderful new event at the S’Klallam Tribal Center in Little Boston from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 25.
Here’s what you’ll experience at the Garden Festival and Plant Sale: lots of annual and perennial plants, berries, trees, tomatoes, vegetable starts, dahlia bulbs and much more. There will be fun for everyone and some freebies and raffles for wonderful garden baskets. The tribe’s Natural Resources Department will have information about recycling. Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions about gardening. Bring the kids for a planting project with Master Gardeners! You’ll even be able to have lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the sale benefits the Port Gamble S’Klallam scholarships.
Today’s column also includes an apology to our largest Kitsap County garden club, Flotsam and Jetsam of Hansville. A few weeks ago when I listed the numerous plant sales I forgot to list theirs.
On May 10 you can not only take advantage of the renowned Master Gardener Foundation plant sale at the Fairgrounds and the Poulsbo Garden Club plant sale at the Northwest Design Center on Highway 305, but also attend from 9 a.m. to noon the Flotsam and Jetsam Plant Sale at the Hansville Community Center on Buck Lake Road in Hansville. This is a huge plant sale because the club has more than 200 members. At the event you’ll find indoor and outdoor plants, cut flowers, refreshments and also a bake sale. Try it, you’ll like it.
Visit Flotsam and Jetsam’s Web site at www.flotsamandjetsamgardenclub.com frequently to find a host of gardening information. The site has links to the Northwest Perennial Plant Alliance and much more gardening information. Also at the site you’ll find this link: http://www.rainyside.com which is filled to the brim with gardening tips and information about gardening here in the Pacific Northwest. I’m a bit partial to this particular Web site because I write for it occasionally, my friend and fellow garden writer Wendy Tweten is featured there and the awesome Debra Teachout-Teashon of Kingston, who created the Web site, contributes incredible photos to the site and also writes educational pieces.
It’s not too late to still sign up for a p-patch plot at the Raab Park Community Garden. Call (360) 779-9898, Poulsbo Parks and Recreation, to reserve a space. Plots lease for $30 for a 10×10-foot space and $40 for a 10×20-foot space. The WSU Kitsap County Master Gardeners have a team of Master Gardeners there to help you grow your own healthy delicious produce. Each year the gardeners at this p-patch plant extra rows of veggies to donate to our local food banks.
If you’re fortunate enough to have your own vegetable garden on your property remember to put in some extra rows so you too can contribute fresh produce to our local food banks. Veggies such as beets, carrots, beans, squash (not humongous zucchini), other root crops and even lettuce are especially appreciated.
The Kingston Garden Club now has a Web site you’ll want to visit. Log on to www.kingstongardenclub.com. It’s always fun and interesting to check out our numerous local garden clubs and plant society Web sites to find a host of information and announcements just right for gardeners. WU
