PORT ORCHARD — All work and no play means it’s time to get to the Dragonfly Cinema in Port Orchard.
The independent theater has slated screening of “The Shining” beginning on Halloween, and showing through Nov. 4. Check its website for show times.
Viewing the 1980 classic adapted from a Stephen King novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick, and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall was so exciting for staff members, they decided to produce their own homage to the film.
“Our owner (Gryphon Shaffer) came up with the idea for the commercial,” Theater Manager Allison Stuart said. “It was relatively on the fly. We used a guy, Matt Esteron, he’s local.”
“Everyone we’ve shown it to is supper exc
ited about it,” she said.
In a 60-second online video, staff recreated a famous scene from “The Shining,” when Wendy Torrance discovers what Jack has really been writing all winter.
Staff member Amy Vanderpool stood in as Wendy Torrance. But Stuart isn’t entirely absent on screen.
“My hands are the ones that are flipping through the pages,” she said.
The video stays true to the film, but Dragonfly staff put their own spin on the scene. They didn’t get everything into the video they wanted, though.
“We had a kid that rode a big wheel but we didn’t have enough time,” Stuart said.

The theater has gotten into the Halloween spirit with screenings of Ghostbusters and other classics over the past month.
“We do classics once a month,” Stuart said. “But I thought for October, there are too many classic movies.”
