IslandWood provides a near-ultimate environmental experience.
A floating classroom that drifts to the center of a pond for water quality experiments, a tree house that stands above a bog offering a serene view of creatures below, a sensory walk across a 60-foot-long suspension bridge blindfolded — now that’s becoming one with nature.
Masked mythical creatures from Birdland wandering about the woods, reciting poetry, interacting and enchanting visitors — that’s another take on environment altogether.
IslandWood provides both and more this weekend with an earth-friendly smattering of entertainment, infotainment and education at Enviropalooza, a family event starting at noon April 13 at the 225-acre outdoor education center at 4450 Blakely Ave. N on Bainbridge. Cost is $10 per family, $5 per person, call (206) 855-4300 or log on to www.islandwood.org to register.
Enviropalooza-goers will have their choice of workshops like an interactive computer program that determines one’s ecological footprint, info on how to make one’s backyard into a certified backyard habitat through the National Wildlife Federation and more.
Plus there will be plenty of time on the trails, musical and theatrical performances in the Great Hall and an enviro-fair with local green groups.
