First Friday Art Walk (held late, because of the holidays) will present encaustic beeswax and mixed media paintings by Susan Najarian today, Jan. 8, at the Bainbridge Public Library. Najarian combines vintage Puget Sound-area photographs, found objects and encaustic beeswax to created an altered appearance of suspension.
“This creates an ethereal and romantic feeling. The intertwined imagery appears to float, as if in a dream,” Najarian said in a press release. The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. It is free, refreshments will be served. Info: bainbridgepubliclibrary.org.
Seattle-based children’s theater The Moonpaper Tent will hold a special performance of classical Ukrainian folktale “The Mitten” at Bainbridge Performing Arts on Saturday, Jan. 9. Billed as “a magical puppet presentation,” the show incorporates creative puppetry, professional actors and fables of friendship in a whimsical ode to the blustery winter season. The story is about the many creatures who find warmth in a mitten after it is lost by a boy during a snowstorm. Turn your thumbs green with the Washington State University Kitsap County Extension’s beginning vegetable gardening class Saturday, Jan. 9. The class is designed for first-time gardeners or those whose past gardens have met little success. The session will cover soils, fertility and other requirements for vegetables, as well as pests and diseases, water systems, planning and common pitfalls. Also learn how to read a seed catalogue. Get in the groove with “Breakin’ it down for a Cause,” a donation breakdance battle event at the Olympic College Bremerton Student Center today, Jan. 8. Donations will be given to the family of Axel Lovinaria to help pay costly bone marrow transplant medical bills. The transplant saved the life of Lovinaria, a Bremerton High School student. Meet Richard LeMieux, author of “Breakfast at Sally’s,” from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Manchester Library Jan. 13. Hear about his descent into homelessness and his journey thereafter. LeMieux tapped out “Breakfast at Sally’s” on a discarded typewriter while living in his minivan.
