Hansville Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club presented $4,200 to local residents in scholarships and grants at its June 10 luncheon.

Moshe Calm, a graduate of Kingston High School, was awarded $1,000. He plans to attend Illinois Institute of Technology and major in chemical and biological engineering with a specialization in energy and environment.

Jessica Randall, a 2009 graduate of Kingston High, received $1,000 toward her studies in marine biology. She has been accepted to four universities, but has not made a final decision. She hopes to continue on for a Masters at James Cook University in Australia.

Thomas Jensen, a 2009 graduate of North Kitsap High, received $1,000 toward his education at Washington State University where he plans to major in soil science and work in soil conservation.

Katelyn Rose, also a 2009 graduate of NKH, received $1000 toward her schooling at University of Alaska Southeast where she plans to major in marine biology to work eventually in “preserving and maintaining wildlife in the oceans.”

The club also awarded two $200 grants. Robin Alberts of Kingston High School received a grant to fund the purchase of bulbs to be planted on the school campus this fall. This project will beautify the campus for many years to come. The garden club also offered help and advice as well as the grant.

The second $200 grant, requested by Erica Whitbeck, went to Hansville Co-op Preschool. Whitbeck plans to involve students and parents as well as the teacher by developing a planter bed of vegetables and flowers beside the Buck Lake Community Center.
