Olalla Elementary School students are putting on fundraisers to raise money to go to Kansas City, Mo., May 22-25 to compete in the Globals 2024 Destination Imagination event.
Last month the seven students guided by teacher Abbi Deyoe were second in a state tournament in Kennewick. They hope to raise $20,000 for plane trip, lodging and a rental vehicle, along with a team ticket for the event that costs $5,000. If they don’t raise the money they will donate it to the Olalla Food Pantry.
Olalla competed in the Art portion of Science Technology Engineering Arts Math. They made a play and had to make a script, learn their lines, and make costumes and props without adult help. There was a list of requirements they had to have in their play, and the team had to do a service project in their community. They collected food for the Olalla Pantry.
DI is a program that South Kitsap facilitates within its schools, and directly impacts academic learning. DI reports that students who participate score higher in critical thinking, teamwork and overall academics.
DI is united by a core belief that when students have the freedom to grow and collaborate without boundaries, their confidence explodes and the world opens up to them. DI enables that transformation by providing challenges rooted in STEAM subjects that inspire unique solutions through the use of the creative process.
People can donate at the South Kitsap School District web store. There’s a Krispy Kreme pre-order form. You can round up your order at Spiros for a month starting April 26. Sound Elite Athletics is putting on a Nerf Wars event. There’s also a GoFundMe site. So far 34 people have donated $2,111.
