With more than 25 published novels and 50 short stories, Garth Nix has made a name for himself in the genre of fantasy. He is perhaps best-known for his Old Kingdom series that has sold more than one million copies world wide.
Now, after nearly 10 years since he last released an addition to the Old Kindgom series, Nix has produced another for eager fans. “Clariel,” a prequel to the series, was released by HarperCollins on Oct. 14. It is set 600 years before the first novel in his fantasy line.
“Clariel’s story is a high fantasy adventure, and can be read and enjoyed simply as a good story,” Nix said. “But underpinning the adventure, it is also a novel about choices, made by Clariel and for her, the ramifications of those choices and the use of political, economic and magical power, and the inevitable cost of wielding those powers.”
Nix is currently touring in support of the release, and will touch down in Poulsbo on Oct. 21 at the Poulsbo Sons of Norway. The event is sponsored by Liberty Bay Books.
Nix will be visiting Poulsbo shortly after his signing appearance at the New York Comic Con, and while en route to signings in Seattle and Bellingham, and on to California.
Nix was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1963. He spent his career on the other side of the literary industry as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, and bookseller. He was also a part-time soldier in the Austrailian Army Reserve.
Since 2001, Nix has been a full-time writer, and he has been busy. Aside from his award-winning young adult fantasy novels in the Old Kingdom series (Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen) he also wrote dystopian novel “Shade’s Children,” a space opera “A Confusion of Princes,” and a regency romance novel, — with a little magic thrown in — titled “Newt’s Emerald.”
Nix has also authored fantasy novels for children, such as “The Ragwitch,” the Seventh Tower sequence, the Keys to the Kingdom series, the Troubletwisters series and “Spirit Animals: Blood Ties,” which he co-wrote with Sean Williams.
More than five million copies of his titles have sold worldwide, and his books have been translated into 40 languages.
Nix currently lives in Sydney, Australia with his family.
