With temperatures teetering on the 90-degree mark, nearly 17,000 yellow rubber duckies plummeted into the cool water of Dyes Inlet.
The ducks bobbed, bounced and rode the current, racing toward the shoreline. About fifteen minutes later, there was a winner.
“The best part about the race was that we had no ducks killed,” joked Silverdale Rotarian Scott Slocum. “And there were no great escapes.”
The Great Kitsap Duck Race returned to the Whaling Days festival Sunday, attracting a couple hundred sunglass-wearing spectators to Silverdale Waterfront Park.
An annual event put on by Silverdale Rotary, the 2009 duck race brought in more than $69,000 through the sale of 16,800 ducks, all of which were dumped into the water for a swim to the finish. Proceeds from the event go directly back to the community in the form of grant money, which is given to various local agencies.
“It was a quality race and everything went well,” Slocum said. “We’re really happy with the amount of money raised.”
The winning duck was purchased by Bremerton’s Randy Holliday, who receives either $16,000 in cash or a 2009 Nissan Truck donated by Advantage Nissan as the grand prize. Holliday will be presented with the grand prize at the Aug. 2 Kitsap BlueJackets baseball game at Lobe Fields at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
The first 30 ducks to cross the finish line earned prizes, ranging from the $16,000 grand prize and other cash prizes to three-month gym memberships and gift certificates.
