Hansville Happenings: A dozen community groups to socialize with

Finding ways to connect to the Hansville community.

Has anyone ever asked you, “What’s there to do in Hansville?” What did you tell them? Did you mention the fishing off of Point No Point or in Hood Canal? Did you tell them about the Fourth of July pancake breakfasts at the Hansville Community Center? Did you mention the great rummage sale the Hansville community holds every year as a fundraiser?

A few weeks ago, the Greater Hansville Community held a Welcome Coffee for newcomers to our area. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and sadly only a few newcomers attended. All the rest of you that couldn’t make this informative meeting missed out on those presentations. However, not to worry. I’m here to fill you in.

Did you know we have a group called Great Decisions? It is a part of a larger global-education organization that sends out a yearly briefing book to groups that subscribe and the members read and discuss a chapter at their monthly meetings. If you would like to contact them, let me know and I’ll give you the info.

Of course you know about the Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club and its wonderful meeting every month, but did you remember they have a plant sale every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day?

Did you know there is a Couple’s Bridge Club? It starts with a September meeting and first round of playing, then the members play at each others homes throughout the year, ending with the playing of the last round together at the community center.

One of the longest-lasting groups is the Men’s Coffee Klatch held at the Hansville store. Some of the guys bring their own cups and fill them up at the front of the store then meet in the back room for much discussion and lots of laughing. (I hear this from a member. No women are invited.) And, of course, there is the Better Halves Coffee Klatch, too. (No men at this one.) Then there are the Solitarians, those single people that come together for coffee and chit-chat. Ask at the Hansville store for days and times or let me know which one you’re interested in.

Other groups you would have heard about at that Saturday meeting are the No Sews, who get together but not for sewing (yes, it started out to be a place to bring your mending and hand sewing but over the years it has changed); the Need to Knit group that does actually knit and shares patterns; the Hansville Ladies Aid that maintains the Hansville Cemetery and helps our neighbors in need; and the Boot Scootin’ Grannies that practice line dancing twice a week and put on shows at places like Port Gamble and the Kitsap County Fair.

I haven’t even mentioned the Wolfle Elementary School volunteers who help in the reading program, or the Friends of the Point No Point Lighthouse which include volunteer docents for the lighthouse, or the Hansville Greenway stewardship group or the farmers and craft Market that runs May through October at Dragonfly Nursery.

There are so many groups and activities that you would be hard pressed to be without something to do. So, if anyone asks you “What is there to do in Hansville?” you can answer them or just refer them to the Hansville community Web site at www.hansville.org. They can find out everything there or if all else fails, drop me an e-mail. I can help you find the right person to talk to about any of the groups I mentioned.
