The Port Gamble Theater Company is having a fundraiser for a new front curtain for the stage — restoring the 100-year-old historical site back to its former glory. They will be accepting all donations, but those who make a charitable donation of $100 or greater will have their names printed on a special “Curtain Raisers” plaque. The Port Gamble Theater is a nonprofit, so all donations are tax deductible. Checks can be mailed to: PGT, P.O. Box 331 Port Gamble, WA 98364. Please include your name(s), as you would like it (them) to appear on the plaque.

Did you know the earliest fruitcake recipe from ancient Rome lists pomegranate seeds, pine nuts and raisins that were mixed into barley mash? It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that honey, spices and preserved fruits were added. In 1490, Pope Innocent VIII granted the use of butter, through a written permission known as the Butter Letter, or butter brief.

What are the top ingredients in your fruitcake? Have you started soaking everything in brandy yet? It’s time to start thinking about Port Gamble’s annual Fruitcake Contest on Dec. 14. We’re counting down the days; will you be ready?
