The world-traveling, world-famous animal man Jeff Corwin will be putting a new dot on the map of places he’s been this weekend. The newest destination: Bainbridge Island.

The man voted one of People Magazine’s most beautiful people has been virtually everywhere in the world during more than a decade of exploring nature, studying wild animal life and documenting it all on TV shows like “The Jeff Corwin Experience” on Animal Planet, but he’s never been to Bainbridge.

Finally, Corwin is making his first trip to Kitsap’s island, giving a live performance to benefit the Kids Discovery Museum Feb. 9 at the Bainbridge High School gymnasium. What’s more, he’ll be bringing along some of his favorite animals from throughout the world.

“From the furred to the feathered to the venomous to the slimy,” Corwin said. “We bring almost a dozen animals.”

Of course, he declined to ruin the surprise by identifying just what creatures he’ll bring along. But he did make note of potentially gigantic serpents, so tickets are likely to go fast. Call (206) 855-4650 or go to www.kidimu.org to reserve.

There will be two shows at noon and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Tickets are going for $27 for adults and $22 for kids.

For Corwin, it’s a somewhat rare and personal performance. The kind he said he treasures because there will be no TV camera or screen between himself and the audience.

“These are moments I really cherish,” he said. “Because I can take the step back and really connect with people.”

Besides his renowned “animal person” status, Corwin also seems like quite the people person — charismatic, friendly, imaginative, and he’s got a barrel full of stories to tell. From traveling in the jungles of South America when he was just a teenager to his decades of world traveling for TV shows and his activistic endeavors, raising awareness for species on the verge of extinction, Corwin will be sharing his “Tales from the Field.”

“Not only is it me up there recounting the adventures and the humor and the trials, I bring with me creatures from around the world that tell the stories,” he said of the program. “It’s really a hybrid of how a TV show is made, what it’s like to do what I do.”

However, this lecture version of what he does will be contained to the Bainbridge gymnasium, and is a little less labor intensive than the real thing.

“The shows that we do, there is a tremendous amount of labor and energy that go into that,” Corwin said, noting sometimes 15-16 hour days of hiking, climbing and walking through the wilderness. “Out of that, we’ll harvest maybe four or five minutes of the show.”

Corwin was recently working in Western Washington, climbing glaciers in the Cascades and kayaking off the coast of Orcas Island for an upcoming sequel to the series “Into Alaska” which premieres Feb. 11 on the Travel Channel.

Shuttle transportation to and from BHS will be available starting at 10:30 a.m. for the noon show and 2 p.m. signing. Pick up locations include the ferry terminal, Bethany Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church.
