Klahowya’s ‘My Fair Lady’ to run March 12-14

Eliza Doolittle arrived at Klahowya Secondary School (KSS) last night where she’ll be making nightly appearances tonight and Saturday before ending her stay on March 14 after three more expected sightings.

Doolittle might not carry the fame of Beyoncé in today’s society, but when she first appeared in the musical “My Fair Lady” she made quite a splash, which is one of the reasons KSS drama instructor Jackie Levenseller waited for the right time to bring the highly acclaimed musical to Klahowya.

The play opened last night and will show at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday before concluding its run with 7 p.m. performances March 12-14.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors and students with ASB cards.

“I’ve always wanted to do this, but you have to have a strong male cast in order to it,” Levenseller said. “We finally have that this year.”

Last year, the group performed “The King and I,” which involved more than 70 students including some elementary children, while this year’s musical has a cast and crew of about 50 students in seventh through 12th grade, she said

“It’s wonderful,” she said of working with students in such a wide age range. “It allows you to cast some age specific parts and you’ll see some of the smaller kids playing younger roles.”

In deciding to take on “My Fair Lady,” Levenseller said she knew it would be challenging, but her students have grown up before her eyes and handled the task.

“Everything is challenging, the sets, the costumes, the props, the music,” she said. “The kids have done a great job and they haven’t complained.”

Unlike some of the other family friendly musicals, the KSS drama group has performed in the past, “My Fair Lady” isn’t exactly one for children of all ages, she said, noting the musical is three hours in length.

“Get a babysitter and come enjoy the play,” Levenseller said.
