Despite the raunchy moves, crazy songs, new haircut, and minimal clothing, Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz concert last week at the Tacoma Dome was a combination of fun, chaos, and recognizing how much Cyrus loves what she represents.

I’ve been to quite a few concerts in my 16 years, (yes I know, not many years) including Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, however, I found this was one of the most entertaining.

Even between songs and during costume changes, although occasionally disturbing, they played videos on the big screen of Cyrus as a cartoon character or showed photographs to music.

My best friend, Ella Herrmann, and I waited in the pouring rain for a good 20 minutes before they opened the doors. During that time we met some people who were in line behind us all the way from Bend, Oregon.

The father joked that they were going to see “Bangerz and Hash” rather than “Bangerz and Mash” since we were in Washington. Even the young man standing in front of us was wearing socks with marijuana leaves on them.

Before the concert had even started, police were saying that more than 200 minors had been found to be in possession of drugs, not surprising, I suppose. During the concert we saw security guards find a couple on the ground engaged in an “encounter.”

My friend and I were shocked by that. I also was surprised by the great diversity in Cyrus’ fan base. The majority of people were same-sex couples, and surprisingly multiple older couples went, either alone or to keep a close eye on their junior high age kids.

A few rows in front of my friend and I were a mother and daughter, the daughter we assumed was about 6 years old. We gasped at this considering the language and messages fans received throughout the show.

Now some people may assume that all of Cyrus’ songs are about sex, drugs, and money. I am here to prove that theory wrong. There is a song on her album called “On My Own” which in the chorus says, “I can do anything, and I’ll do it on my own.”

I interpreted this song as an empowering song for girls to know that they don’t need a man to accomplish great things. That’s just what Cyrus has done after breaking up with former boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.

This could actually be one of the first songs that she has performed since “The Climb” back in 2009 that is good for young girls. During Cyrus’ most popular fast-paced songs everyone danced and sang along, watching her in leotards dancing on a “Cadillac” or twerking with the infamous woman from her VMA performance.

However, during her slow songs, the dome lit up with cell phone lights and everyone listened to her stories in song. It is said her album Bangerz was written mostly based on her break up with Hemsworth, which of course devastated everyone.

Hearing those songs remind people that she is a real person and has feelings too, despite her sometimes inappropriate behavior.

By the end of the concert I had beer spilt on my foot, had been pulled in to dance with a lesbian, had a sore throat and had a million memories to share.

Overall, the concert was crazy, exciting and entertaining, between the people-watching and the performance.

I would definitely do it all again, as long as I wasn’t present for the action between the couple on the ground.
