Old Town Silvredale frame shop and gallery hosts ‘Have a Heart Show 2’ this month.

It’s not the best time to be an artist whose wares are considered discretionary.

There are few places to show locally in Kitsap, which means fewer customers. And nowadays even those customers have less money which means they are buying less which has a trickle down effect through the galleries and venues and back to that artist whose wares are considered discretionary.

Yet the area is still flush with folks making jewelry or working in fiber arts.

They need a place to show, and there’s no better time than Valentine’s to do so. That’s the thinking behind the Old Town Custom Frame Shop and Gallery’s annual Have a Heart wearable art show, which opens at 6 p.m. tonight, 3255 NW Lowell St. in Silverdale.

Shop owner Maria Mackovjak, a veracious patron of the arts and community advocate, said she like to see the show evolve into a forum similar to Tacoma’s annual RAGS wearable art show only in Kitsap.

Kitsap artists shouldn’t have to travel out of town to showcase their wares, she surmises. Plus, filling a niche in the community that needs to be filled, gives her gallery all the more staying power.

Which is in high demand these days as galleries across the nation are closing doors, attributed to the downfall of discretionary income.
