Oh to the Ides of March and the happenings in Port Gamble. Have you ever wondered what the “Ides of March” means and who came up with it? Well, a wee bit of history and something you won’t find in the Port Gamble Historic Museum (reopens March 6) the Ides of March is the name of March 15 in the Roman calendar.

The Ides fell on the 15th day of March, May, July or October or the 13th day of any other month. The Ides of March was a festive day dedicated to the god Mars and a military parade was usually held. In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C. On to the happenings of Port Gamble.
