An improvisational comedy event that was canceled by last month’s snowstorm has been rescheduled.

At 7 p.m. on Jan 23 the South Kitsap High School Acting Ensemble will host an Improv night, during which members of the audience will be encouraged to shout out topics that will become the basis of the skit — sort of like “Who’s Line is it Anyway,” with a local edge.

It will be followed by the “Canned Film Festival,” during which several short films created by students will be shown in succession.

Lasting 4 to 5 minutes, the films will embrace the drama, comedy, action and horror genres, according to Educational Assistant Thomas Henry.

A can of food will be collected at the door, as admission to the event.

The food will be donated to SK Helpline.

“We’ve been kicking around the idea of trying something in the film or video realm,” Henry said. “And what better reason to experiment, than for charity?”

One of the biggest “experiments‚” is scheduled for the Improv night, as instructor Scott Yingling has promised to shave his head to a Mohawk live on stage if the event sells out and fills the auditorium.

Yingling and Henry will also be on the judging panel for the film event, with the winner getting “bragging rights,” along with entry into next year’s Seattle Film Festival.

“We wanted to try something unique‚” said Henry. “In the film making class, we usually shoot in a 4-by-3 format. But this time we are using widescreen resolution, which has been a challenge for the kids.”

Titles for the film event were still being finalized at press time. However, each film was produced by eight teams of students who split the tasks and completed the project together.

The event takes place in the SKHS auditorium.
