Poulsbo Community Orchestra performs ‘Night at the Movies’

This program is billed as a “Night at the Movies” Pops Concert, with 65 musicians performing familiar cinema selections

POULSBO — The Poulsbo Community Orchestra’s final performance of the 2016-17 season begins at 3 p.m. June 25 at the North Kitsap Community Auditorium.

Admission is free; donations are appreciated.

This program is billed as a “Night at the Movies” Pops Concert, with 65 musicians performing familiar cinema selections.

Following the recognizable 20th Century Fox fanfare, the orchestra will entertain with four rousing selections by world-famous composer John Williams from “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Jurassic Park,” and “E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial.”

Rounding out this movie-themed event will be Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean — At the World’s End,” and several Hollywood blockbusters hits by James Horner. This special arrangement by John Moss will include music from “Titanic,” “Braveheart,” and other hits, such as “Apollo 13,” “Bannockburn,” “Somewhere Out There,” “My Heart Will Go On,” and “Southhampton.”

Leading the orchestra will be volunteer maestro Bruce Mansfield, who also serves as director of Navy Region Northwest Band at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor; and guest conductor Mario Torres, a doctoral candidate studying conducting at University of Washington.

The Poulsbo orchestra, now concluding three successful years performing in North Kitsap, has joined three other symphonies in the West Sound area — Bremerton and Bainbridge orchestras, and the Port Townsend Community Orchestra. Rehearsal for the next concert season begins on Monday nights in September at North Point Church, across from North Kitsap High School. The orchestra’s administrative partner, Poulsbo Parks and Recreation, collects a modest registration fee for each musician’s participation. Registration is now open for the 2017-18 rehearsal season.

In the 2017-2018 season, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances,” and Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”

The Poulsbo orchestra was established for volunteer musicians in 2014, performs free concerts, and relies on the generosity of community donors and sponsors for funding. In recent weeks, the Friends of the Orchestra Association, which includes supporters interested in supporting North Kitsap’s only symphony, was formed to support the orchestra’s missions in the community.
