Poulsbo Sons of Norway offers season’s last chance for lutefisk

Lien, along with many others, will have a serving of lutefisk — or maybe two — at the 13th annual Poulsbo Sons of Norway lutefisk dinner Saturday, Nov. 6.

POULSBO — Archie Lien has been dining on lutefisk since he was a child. At 86, Lien remembers his parents preparing the dish each fall. The Kitsap native acquired a taste for the traditional, lye-soaked cod.

Lien, along with many others, will have a serving of lutefisk — or maybe two — at the 13th annual Poulsbo Sons of Norway lutefisk dinner Saturday, Nov. 6.

“I used to be able to go up for thirds and fourths and fifths, but at 86 I’m just a nibbler now,” Lien said.

Six hundred pounds of codfish will be delivered to Poulsbo from Port Townsend’s New Day Fisheries. Sons of Norway volunteers will boil the fish in cheesecloth before serving it. Roughly 50 volunteers have rolled 140 pounds of meatballs and fried more than 200 slices of lefse in the few past weeks in preparation for the dinner.

Organizer Vicky Spray said she’s hoping 400 patrons come to dine on the Norwegian spread. The dinner usually draws between 400 and 500 people.

“With the economy the way it is, that’s kind of a concern. But people that really like it — really like it,” Spray said.

The all-you-can-eat dinner also includes performances by the Leikarringen dancers. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 10 and under.

Lefse volunteer Kathy Moncries said extra lefse was made this year, since last year it sold out. Moncries has been volunteering at the dinner for a decade.

“I’m one of the newer ones,” she said.

Lien is one of many who stay true to Norwegian taste, finishing a plate full of lutefisk and asking for more, Moncries said.

“It is amazing how much they eat, they just love it. And it’s not always the big burly men either. Sometimes it’s little old ladies. It’s fun to watch,” she said.

The Sons of Norway lutefisk dinner runs from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Info: www.poulsbosonsofnorway.com.
