Rotary speaker puts face on homeless | Rotary News | November

Richard Lemieux, author of “Breakfast at Sally’s,” will speak to the Kingston Rotary Club on Nov. 10. Lemieux will tell his story of one homeless man’s inspirational journey.

He puts a face on the homeless and shows them to be just as diverse and human as the rest of society. The public is invited to attend the noon meeting held at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club. Lunch is $7. RSVP to sondipeters@centurytel.net by Nov. 5 to reserve a seat.

Bill Maule has been busy the last few weeks planning our first Short Term Youth Exchange Program. Several club members recently interviewed a candidate and unanimously pronounced her a winner.

Their choice was Megan Martin, the granddaughter of Kingston Rotarians Dan and Nancy Martin. As soon as all documents are ready, her application will go first to District 5020 for final approval and then to Rotary International to complete arrangements for the exchange.

Under this program Megan will travel abroad next summer to spend a month in the home of a host family with a daughter of a similar age. The two girls will then travel back to Kingston and spend another month living in Megan’s home. It is not known yet to which country Megan will travel, but we hope it will be to one of her top choices.

We are confident that Megan and her new “sister” will join us at several Rotary lunches and will present a joint program about their adventures. Congratulations Megan!

Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer was our guest speaker on Sept. 29. Bauer provided a very thorough overview of the state of the county’s finances, in particular surprising many of us with his review of the county resources which are dedicated to Kingston and North Kitsap.

He went on with a question and answer session during which he described in detail the history of the Kitsap Consolidated Housing Authority problem and the solutions the board and county have developed, as well as taking on board concerns about county support for local initiaties like the Village Green Foundation and the local blood drive.

Club members reacted very positively to Bauer’s presentation, and look forward to benefitting from his continuing leadership in the future.
