More than 100 chiefs and chief selectees helped assemble and construct homes as part of Habitat for Humanity’s ongoing project at the Bremerton New Hope building site Sept. 13.

Chief petty officer induction features several opportunities for the selectees to volunteer and participate in community activities.

“The Navy is doing an awesome job and we couldn’t have done this without their help,” Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Lori Oberlander said. “Sailors are giving up their days off just to help us out and are committed to this construction site.”

The Habitat for Humanity volunteer program is a nonprofit organization that helps build housing in partnership with low-income families.

Oberlander added that, not only do sailors help protect our country, they help build the community they share.

“Throughout the year we are always looking for a community relations project to volunteer for and this is one of our biggest projects,” said Command Master Chief Dave Kerr, Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) event coordinator.

Service members were split into six groups to work on different building projects including landscaping, tiling, dry wall, flooring and siding.

“This gives us a chance to interact with the community and I enjoy helping out,” said Chief Missile Technician (Select) Bradford Grant of Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific. “Volunteering builds good people and character. I hope more junior sailors will be inspired to help out too.”

For the past year, service members have been dedicated to the New Hope building site. According to Oberlander, each week various commands continue to provide volunteers.

“This is all worthwhile and this shows chiefs are engaged with the community,” said Command Master Chief Bill Keith, Submarine Group 9. “Every sailor here has a skill they are talented at and they are applying what they know constructively by volunteering.”

“We are working together with our sponsors and this prepares us for our new roles in the chief community,” said Chief Missile Technician Chief (Select) Chris Harrington, IMF.
