Sound the klaxon at the Naval Undersea Museum

First Saturday is Family Day at the Naval Undersea Museum.

Families with children pre-school to age 12 are invited to Family Day the first Saturday of every month from October through June.

Each Family Day will include an experiment or make and take craft project, a story and song time, and a tour of the galleries.

The fun begins at 10 a.m. and ends with a tour about noon.

Parents or a responsible adult must accompany children.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, the topic is submarines named after fish.

It’s hip to be square (dancing)

Kitsap Square Dance Center, 6800 W. Belfair Valley Road, is hosting square dancing lessons. Gig Harbor Twirlers will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3; and Round Squares will be from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The first dance is free, all others $3.

Bainbridge raises its wine glasses

Bainbridge Island is gearing up to spend a weekend paying homage to wine from Friday, Oct. 1 to Sunday, Oct. 3.

Local wine makers will meet and greet the public and celebrate the harvest season as attendees sample wines from area vintners and dance to the music of Bluefish Tango.

The weekend kicks off with a street party in the historic Marina District on Friday night. On Saturday night, celebrants can select one of two wine dinners—one on a farm and one downtown.

From noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, Bainbridge Performing Arts will host the Bainbridge Island Wine Weekend Grand Tasting. BPA is located at 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge.

Bridging an historical gap

“Spanning the Great Peninsula — Bridges of Kitsap” is a new exhibit opening Friday, Oct. 1, at the Kitsap County Historical Society Museum.

Admission is free.

The museum is located at 280 4th St. in downtown Bremerton. Exhibit will run through March 4, 2011.

Armchair poets share their prose

The Poulsbohemian Armchair Poetry Series presents poets David Stallings, Tim McNulty, and John Willson will read their work starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse, 19003 Front St. in Poulsbo.

Open-mic readings follow the featured readers.
