Silverdale Summer Fest: An end of summer ode to rock and beer

Another first-ever festival for Kitsap, Summer Fest celebrates local beer, local music and local merchandisers on the lawn at Silverdale Beach Hotel Aug. 22.

The age-old combo drives local merchants to combine forces for Kitsap’s inaugural Summer Fest, Aug. 22 at Silverdale Beach Hotel.

As its beers started showing up in grocery aisles and on tap at local taverns and stores earlier this year, the folks at Silver City Brewery received a resoundingly uniform response from its patrons.

“’It’s about time,’” co-owner Scott Houmes said with a smile.

“We hear that a lot when we throw out our festival ideas,” added Chuck Mitchell of The RockIt Roost — an emerging Silverdale merchant which threw the county’s first-ever rockabilly and pin-up festival earlier this summer.

This weekend, Silver City and The RockIt Roost combine forces to put on yet another first-ever Kitsap festival — an end of summer ode to beer and rock – the inaugural Summer Fest, Aug. 22 at the Silverdale Beach Hotel.

“It’s something that’s been on the tip of everyone’s tongue,” noted Kurt Larson, Silver City’s new outside beer seller. “It’s something that we need more of in this county.”

All the way around, Larson added, from the beers to the vendors to the music, it’s a local affair.

Five local bands — Chyeah! Chyeah!, Ruxton Towers, The New Affair, Alligators and Mike Herrera’s Tumbledown — are slated to take the Summer Fest stage from 4-9:30 p.m. that day, while McClouds Saloon provides the BBQ and Silver City stocks the Beach Hotel full of its signature beers. (Though they can’t promise they won’t run out of the ever-popular Ridgetop Red).

“It’s been inside our four walls for so long,” Houmes said. “This is the first year we’ve started doing a real strong push out into the community.”

Having built up its brewpub business since 1996 — with brewmeister Don Spencer bringing home numerous national and international awards over the years — the storied Silverdale restaurant and brewery expanded its brewery side in 2008, bringing in new tanks which nearly tripled its production capacity. That increased capacity has enabled Silver City to distribute its locally loved, widely awarded beers even further into the community — 28 bars and restaurants and nearly 20 grocery stores in the West Sound — much to the satisfaction of the Silver City faithful.
