Many iconic jewels from Jolly Old England are making an appearance at The Dauntless Bookstore in Port Gamble. Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, Salisbury Cathedral are all on display at the bookstore’s hall gallery throughout April — as seen through the lenses of Bruce and Patricia Overman.

Under the spell of discovery while visiting and sight-seeing in foreign countries, the couple decided to document their travels and the historic scenes they’d seen. Then the Overman’s — who are based in Des Moines — found a nook in cyberspace and came up with a photo-professional name, The Surrogate Travelers.

“What we thought about was trying to tell stories about our travels with the photos kind of letting other people travel through them,” Bruce said.

“What really started it was, we read a lot of historical books,” Patricia added.” So we decided we would travel based on the history we read.”

That lead them to the United Kingdom’s countryside, which then turned into the photographic exhibit England, London to Land’s End which caught the eye of Dauntless owner Lyn Playle, thus bringing the Palace of Westminster and more to Port Gamble.

But it won’t be only fortresses of royalty and cultural icons decorating the Dauntless.

“We also like to get into the countryside, so there will also be some things that people might not have normally seen,” Bruce said.

The Surrogate Travelers’ exhibit includes scenes from the small cathedral city of Wells, the Posbridge in Dartmoor and St. Mawes coastline in Cornwall.

The travelers themselves shoot with all Canon gear — 300D and 20D models with two extra lenses, Bruce said. They then make their own prints and also post digital images at their Web site — www.surrogatetravelers.com.

As of press time, surrogatetravelers.com visitors were only able to travel to England, but the Overman’s are planning to expand.
