CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: As part of its October One Community, One Book events, featuring Cannery Row, by John Steinbeck, the Bainbridge Public Library is compiling a collection of short, fictionalized sketches of life on Bainbridge Island written in the style of “Cannery Row.” Bainbridge Islanders are invited to craft their own fictional stories – up to 2,000 words long – about life on Bainbridge Island, past or present. NAVAL UNDERSEA MUSEUM: The Naval Undersea Museum will participate in the fifth annual Museum Day, presented by Smithsonian magazine, on Sept. 26. The Naval Undersea Museum explores the fascinating story of the U.S. Navy’s heritage, operations, and science in the depths of the world’s oceans. Major exhibits interpret submarine technology, the ocean environment, torpedo and mine technology, and Navy diving and salvage. The current featured exhibit is entitled Trieste: The Deepest Dive and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the descent of the submersible Trieste to the deepest point in the world’s oceans. HELP TRACK SALMON: Volunteers are needed help track salmon spawning in Bainbridge Island streams this fall. Teams will visit island streams once a week from early October through December in the fifth year of this program, which is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Watershed Council, the city, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. Participants must be at least 14 years old and must be able to navigate uneven surfaces and slopes and cross streams on slippery logs.
