SKAA at the Sidney

For almost 20 years, this show has been an annual fall tradition.

Each year, the Sidney Gallery hosts a competition exhibition for the South Kitsap Artists Association — a group that’s been meeting regularly for nearly a half century in and around Port Orchard.

The annual SKAA Show at the Sidney is up through Oct. 30 at 202 Sidney Ave. in Port Orchard. Its artists will be feted with a reception from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 12.

For any South Kitsap artisans, or just people who like to paint, who would like to get involved with the SKAA, there’s no Web site to look up, no specific phone number to call — just drop in to one of their monthly meetings, at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of each month at Cedar Heights Junior High, 2220 Pottery Road.

Fiber artist Ann Maki

Ann Maki has made traditional quilts and clothing for the past 15 years. She’s been stitching for most of her life.

But these days she’s doing something outside of the convention conjured by your typical quilter. She calls them Thread Sketches.

She uses “high contrast color relationships” and “textured surfaces” as metaphors for human and natural emotions, creating often wild works of abstract fine, functional and wearable art out of embellished and manipulated cotton fabrics. She’s featured at the Kingston Art Gallery this month, with works inspired by autumn colors.

The gallery just announced it is dropping a day and will only be open Wednesday through Sunday, but the traditional Second Saturday Gallery Night continues with music provided by cellist Maren Hayes this month, from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 11.
