Christmas is coming, but there’s still time for last-minute crafters to put together handmade gifts. And you don’t even need sewing experience to make a thoughtful gift!
“We’re hosting a number of classes this December that are friendly to beginners and confident-beginners,” says Piper Tupper, owner of Esther’s Fabrics at 181 Winslow Way E on Bainbridge Island.
When Piper purchased the beloved Bainbridge Island store last year, she was determined to create a welcoming space that was less intimidating than other fabric stores. There are no ‘stupid questions’ at Esther’s Fabrics (named for its founder Esther Fox, who first opened the store in 1959), and Piper carefully selects fabrics, kits and notions that will inspire creativity no matter your skill level.
“If you’d like to take a class and don’t have a sewing machine, there are machines available at the store. If you have a sewing machine at home that you don’t know how to use, bring it in for the class and we’ll show you how to use it,” Piper says.
Most of the projects in December’s classes can be completed in a single session, so you’ll leave with a completed item, ready to gift. Perfect for stocking stuffers, or adding that personal touch to a store-bought gift.
Notions, handmade gifts, craft kits and more
For those short on time, the elves at Esther’s Fabrics have been busy stocking their pop-up Christmas shop with handmade gifts available for purchase. You can also browse the carefully curated selection of sewing notions for the crafter on your list.
Purchase a bundle of felt stars and hearts to make your own tree garland, hang a handful in your window, or pile them inside a mason jar with a string of lights to brighten up these long winter nights. Grab an advent calendar kit to sew a memory piece for the holidays that you can fill with little gifts or chocolates year after year — Piper says the kit goes together pretty quick and easy.
The store also has a wide selection of holiday fabrics for making Christmas stockings, pajamas, napkins, aprons and more.
