Cartagena, Colombia—In a unique twist to the usual finals week, West Sound Academy’s Junior and Senior classes embarked on a ten-day service trip to Cartagena, Colombia, replacing traditional exams with an immersive cultural experience. This initiative aligns with the school’s commitment to the International Baccalaureate (IB) mission of fostering intercultural understanding and respect.
After completing their final evaluations earlier, the students set off on May 15th, arriving to a warm welcome of Caribbean humidity and vibrant local culture. Their first night was spent dining on traditional cuisine, serenaded by live performances of popular Colombian songs, setting the tone for an adventure filled with learning and discovery.
Living the IB Mission
As an IB World School, West Sound Academy (WSA) strives to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who contribute to a better and more peaceful world. “This year’s trip is part of the ongoing IB curriculum for our 11th graders, included in their tuition. I’m excited to see the impact future trips will have on our students,” said Catherine Freeman, West Sound Academy’s Head of School.
Cultural and Educational Immersion
During their stay, students engaged in Creative, Active, and Service learning opportunities that immersed them in the language and culture of Cartagena. Highlights included visiting the home of renowned novelist Gabriel García Márquez, exploring the historic San Felipe de Barajas Fort, and engaging with local artists and merchants. These experiences were designed to broaden students’ perspectives and deepen their appreciation for different cultures.
One particularly impactful day involved navigating a bustling local market. Students sampled exotic fruits, vegetables, and seafood, purchasing ingredients to replicate traditional recipes under the guidance of local chefs. “This trip served as an incredible means for learning about people in different cultures and their ways of life,” said Ian McCallister, a junior.
Service and Social Impact
The trip also included meetings with three different non-governmental organizations (NGOs). “I found meeting with the NGOs to be the most valuable [part of the trip]. In these meetings, we were introduced to people who worked to change not only their lives but the lives of others,” noted Nadia Fisch, a senior. These interactions provided students with new ideas for service projects within their own communities, reinforcing WSA’s emphasis on empathy and community engagement.
Building Global Citizens
West Sound Academy prides itself on encouraging students to be internationally minded. The Cartagena trip was a successful introduction to cross-cultural interaction, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect. Despite initial nerves about traveling to a predominantly Spanish-speaking country, students built connections with an open and accepting mindset.
“The trip was a resounding success in terms of Spanish immersion and building bridges between international communities. Can’t wait to go again next year!” said Virginia Staab, one of the trip chaperones.
