KINGSTON — The Festival of the Arts, which started 10 years ago at Kingston Junior High, has grown into a district-wide event.

Now hosted at Kingston High School, the festival features both student art and art from local galleries and businesses. Student art displayed is from elementary students and up. Business art displayed will include photography, tattoo art and jewelry.

The festival is May 23, 5-9 p.m. in the main building. Arts Department Head James Andrews said both floors of the building will be packed with student and business art.

“Tons of student art,” he said. “The hallways will be filled.”

During the festival, Superintendent Richard Jones will make his selections for the Superintendent’s Art Purchase Award. One award is given for elementary, middle and high school levels. The selected art is displayed at the school district’s administrative office.

Each of the secondary visual art teachers will also be awarding six medals for distinguished work.

To accompany the displayed artwork, performances will be held throughout the night. This includes an encore of the Rhapsody in Blues concert and the Kingston Middle School guitar ensemble’s History of Rock. Performers from the InMotion Performing Arts Studio are planning a return. And, although it’s not official yet, Andrews said the Suquamish Canoe Family singers may be returning to the festival.
