200,000 gallon sewage, storm water spill prompts no-contact advisory

A no-contact advisory has been issued for Dyes Inlet and Port Washington Narrows following a combined sewer overflow.

According to a Kitsap Public Health District announcement, about 200,000 gallons of untreated storm water and sewage spilled into the waterways on Dec. 11 prompting the advisory. The spill was first reported by the City of Bremerton Public Works and Utilities.

The no-contact advisory is expected to remain in effect until Dec. 18. During a no-contact advisory, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water in the affected areas.

The Kitsap Public Health District advises against swimming, wading, or types of water recreation or play where water could be swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes. People should also avoid direct skin contact if possible, and immediately wash with soap and water if they have exposure to the water. Signs have been posted at public access points along Dyes Inlet and Port Washington Narrows.
