POULSBO — Nearly 500 high school seniors threw their caps into the air Friday and Saturday as the community celebrated the graduates of 2013.

An estimated 300 North Kitsap High School Vikings graduated Friday, 7 p.m, at North Kitsap Stadium. On Saturday at 2 p.m., 194 Kingston High School Buccaneers graduated at the stadium.

The graduation rate for Kingston High School is about 85 percent, according to information from the school. Of those graduates, approximately 65 percent plan to attend college next year.

Though “numerous scholarship offers have been received for Buccaneers seniors,” according to the school, there is no accurate amount of the scholarships awarded. Ditto for the Vikings.

The percentage of Viking graduates planning for college next year was not available Thursday.

North Kitsap’s Reagan Colyer and Mencius Leonard spoke at the Vikings’ graduation ceremony. Colyer was class valedictorian, Leonard was salutatorian.

Nine NK graduates also earned associate’s degrees from Olympic College through the Running Start program: Brittney Brown, Cassandra Castillo, Elizabeth Donnelly, Zachery Kuntz, Scott Leeming, Madison Minder, Nathan Trivers, Gregory Warns, and Colyer.

Kingston’s Cailyn Crossland, Simon Campo, Lauren Miller and Victor Morgan addressed the Buccaneers. Crossland and Campo were co-salutatorians, Miller and Morgan were co-valedictorians.

Four Kingston graduates also earned associate’s degrees from Olympic College through the Running Start program: Miles A. Dudley, Logan A. Green, Jessica N. Johnson, and Kyler D. Lacey.

Singers from the Suquamish Tribe and Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe ang an honor song at both graduations. The high school bands performed at their respective graduations; the NKHS Concert Choir also performed for the Vikings.

West Sound Academy’s 12th annual commencement ceremony was June 6 at Kiana Lodge. Eight students graduated. Some $156,495 in scholarships were awarded, and class members had acceptance letters from a total of 19 colleges and universities.
