Woman dies at scene of car accident
POULSBO — A 34-year-old Port Orchard woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a two car accident at 5:37 p.m. Jan. 21 on Clear Creek Road near Finn Hill Road, according to the Poulsbo Fire Department (PFD).
The woman had been driving her Mazda Protege when it was struck by a Volkswagon Passat headed northbound on Clear Creek Road, driven by a 32-year-old Poulsbo resident. He was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment, PFD officials said.
Debris from the accident was strewn for several yards from the vehicles, and the Volkswagon’s engine was found about 75 yards from the vehicle.
A booster seat was found ejected from the Mazda as well, and officials spent time combing the area with a heat-sensing, thermal-imager camera for additional accident victims.
The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of first of kin. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, PFD officials said.
Convicted felons and
rifles just don’t mix
INDIANOLA — A 40-year-old Indianola man learned the hard way convicted felons are not allowed to fiddle with firearms. After a caller reported hearing a single gunshot in the vicinity of Kitsap Street north of Sister Sky Lane at 10:38 p.m. Jan. 17, the man was discovered with a rifle and a shell casing from the incident, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies found a pickup truck in that area, with the man laying across the front seat. After cooperating with deputies by exiting the vehicle, he admitted to accidentally firing the rifle found in the front of the truck.
The man said the firearm didn’t belong to him. After deputies ran a search on his name, they discovered he is a convicted felon. The man said he accidently fired the rifle while trying to lock it in the back of the vehicle. He claimed he didn’t know the rifle was in the truck. He said he knew it was a “bad idea” for him to have the gun because he’s a convicted felon. Upon discovering the back of the truck was already locked and he had no way to gain access, he attempted to unload the gun and it went off, he claimed.
Deputies removed a live round from the rifle. The convicted felon was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County Jail for felony possession of a firearm with bail set at $5,000.
