HANSVILLE — Billed as North Kitsap’s most spectacular opportunity for person-to-person recycling, the Greater Hansvillie Community Center opens its annual rummage sale at 9 a.m. tomorrow, running through 4 p.m. at Buck Lake park. The sale continues Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Leftover items are free on Monday.

Featuring thousands of individual items plus a silent auction, the giant sale includes clothing, kitchen items, antiques, tools, recreational items and furniture. For the first time in the rummage sale’s history, an automobile will be included in the silent auction which runs from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday. Other auction highlights include a mountain bike, antique sewing machine, and two inflatable dinghies.

All proceeds from the sale are applied to the community center’s annual budget. According to member prior community center President Fred Nelson, last year’s rummage sale earned about $26,000, amounting to about 60 percent of the annual operating budget.

Rummage sale manager Chuck Strahm likens the opening of the sale to an 1880s land rush. A crowd of bargain hunters will gather behind a yellow tape barrier, waiting anxiously for the moment it drops.

“The parking lot opens at 7 a.m. and people line up early,” Strahm said. “About 50 percent of our total sales in furniture are done in the first two hours.”
