Opportunities aplenty at Bremerton Ice Arena.

As summer’s clock ticks toward midnight, recreational enthusiasts are moving from the great outdoors to the confines of roofs and walls.

One option: The Bremerton Ice Arena.

With expanded activities, the ice arena figures to bustle through winter and into the new year.

A National Hockey League (NHL)-sized rink, centered around a 300-person seating capacity, is the arena’s main attraction where, in addition to group and private lessons, beginner and competitive adult and youth hockey leagues are available.

“It’s a good clean, safe environment,” said Hockey General Manager Floyd Johnson.

The arena also is home of the Puget Sound Tomahawks Junior A hockey club.

And for those who prefer to practice their skills without officials, “drop-in hockey” is available to both youth and adults.

“We’re trying to make sure people know the rink is there,” Johnson said, explaining that it’s a family oriented environment.

Parents, too, can join the action through “Parent and Me Stick Time,” a program allowing moms and dads to hone their skills together with their child in a non-game setting.

“We’ve been growing every year since 2004,” Johnson said.

And special activities, ranging from birthday bashes to broomball to field trips to fundraisers, give arena visitors — young and old — plenty more opportunities. Private accommodations, for small parties or large corporate events, also can be made with food, music and good company topping the list of priorities.

For those who need to dust off their skates, the ice arena offers drop-off skate sharpening for both hockey and figure skates. Skates left over the weekend are ready after 3 p.m. Monday and skates left Monday through Thursday are ready after 3 p.m. Friday. A customer care retail shop will open soon. Other special programs include referee clinics, a “learn to skate” program, youth and adult hockey leagues and the Battle for the Sound Tournament Series.

The latest addition to the arena’s activity list are “Electro-Skate” public sessions featuring flashing lights and an open skate. Johnson said he encourages the general public to check out the new lights.

“(The lights) give it a little more flavor, more atmosphere,” he said. “(It) lets the kids have fun.”

“It’s just a fun place for kids to come, especially now that summer is ending,” Johnson said.
