A Glance at the Past: Local Japanese heritage shared

A look at "From Cherry Blossoms to Strawberries" in Kingston.

The Kingston Historical Society was pleased to welcome a former Kingstonite to our July meeting. Yukie Fukuzawa Yumibe came up from her home in Tacoma to tell some of her remembrances of growing up in Kingston in the 1920s, ‘30s and early ‘40s.

She talked about the adult lives of many of the Japanese children who lived here during those decades. Many fond memories were shared during the open discussion time after Yukie’s presentation.

Yukie has written a booklet about her childhood, “From Cherry Blossoms to Strawberries,” which will soon be available for purchase through the Kingston Historical Society.

Mr. and Mrs. Yamashita donated a small piece of their property located on high ground unfit for gardening. The members of the community built a small church and community center there. The picture reprinted here was taken there and is included in Yukie’s book (Copyright Yukie Fukuzawa Yumibe).
