KINGSTON — For Dennis and Beverly Hotz, a satisfied customer is a well-rested one.

The couple owns the Bargain Stop Discount Mattresses in Kingston and for the past year and a half have been supplying North Kitsap sleepers with comfort and support.

Dennis’ father owned a successful mattress business in Port Angeles and that inspired him to open a mattress business himself.

“Having watched my dad, his experience in the business was so good. We just thought it was a natural for us,” Dennis said.

The store, where mattress bargains abound, is not a big warehouse or actually very big at all. But don’t let the store’s size fool you. The Bargain Stop, which specializes in Englander mattresses, offers a broad range of sleeping surfaces.

“Picking a mattress is an individual thing,” Beverly said.

Dennis points to a three-inch ring binder and called it the tip of the mattress iceberg.

“We can almost get them a mattress they design themselves,” Dennis said.

“A person has vast choices.”

Top of the line is a Laytex mattress that provides all-over support with cushioning.

“They cost more, but it’s kind of the old story — you pay a little more and you get a lot more in the long run,” Dennis said, adding that the Laytex mattress could last 30 years or more.

Bargain Stop is true to its name with traditional mattresses at affordable prices. Their “no frills” approach to selling mattresses translates to lower costs to the consumer. Although they charge a small fee for mattress delivery, they will deliver to the North Kitsap area.

Low prices also mean low-pressure sales, the Hotzes said. In fact, some customers have taken months to decide which mattress is best for them.

“We handle them in a friend-to-friend way,” Dennis said.

The business track record shows just how satisfied customers are with their purchase. In the past year and a half, only one mattress was exchanged, Dennis said.

The Hotzes moved to Poulsbo from Edmonds after visiting their daughter. They set up shop in Kingston for economical, rather than emotional reasons. And with the recent opening of the Lindvog Road, their spot between the Bradley Center and the Billie Johnson Skate Park is a snug fit.

They hope the business will help them build a comfortable retirement and refer to it in jest as their hobby. Dennis also operates a carpet cleaning business.

The Hotzes are so sure visitors to the store will find a quality mattress at a great price, it doesn’t bother them when a person leaves without making a purchase.

“If you go out and do the research, you’ll be back,” Dennis said.
