A Port Orchard couple always thought it was a rare coincidence to share a birthday on March 1.

Then they had their baby. And rare coincidence got thrown right out the window.

Daniel Foucher, 30, and Shauna Elliot, 22, had baby Owen Daniel Foucher at 11:22 p.m. on March 1, 2012 at the Womens and Childrens Center in Silverdale, giving mother, father and baby the same birthday.

“It’s kind of unbelievable,” said Foucher, a former South Kitsap student and lifetime Port Orchard resident. “I mean, what are the odds?”

The odds, according to a similar news story broadcast on WHDH in Boston in 2009, are exactly 133,225 to one.

Foucher and Elliot, who have been together four years, thought sharing the same birthday as a couple was interesting. When they first met at a friend’s birthday party, Foucher didn’t believe Elliot was telling the truth.

“I kept being like, ‘you’re joking, you’re joking,” he said. “Then she showed me her driver’s licensee.”

When the couple found out Elliot was pregnant in September, it didn’t really occur to them that they had the slim chancing of adding a third to the March 1 birthday club.

The baby was due sometime between Feb. 12 and Feb 20, meaning unless Owen held out for at least 10 days, he would miss the mark.

Hold out he did. When the couple went to the doctor’s office on Feb. 27 with the baby a week late, their doctor told them they should induce birthing to prevent any complications.

But when Foucher offhandedly mentioned that the couple shared the same birthday, the doctor quickly changed his mind.

“We told the doctor about the birthdays and he got really excited,” he said. “He got out his cell phone and started calculating the odds.”

The doctor decided it would be safe to wait to induce the baby until Feb. 29.

Being a leap year, the baby’s birthday would fall on March 1 most years, a close enough technicality to satisfy the doctor’s wish to see a March 1 family.

After birthing was induced on the morning of Feb. 29, they waited. And waited. And waited.

Soon a seemingly sure thing turned in to a near miss.

“I was totally, like, ‘I can’t believe he hasn’t come out yet,” Elliot said. “I was going to be mad after all that waiting if he would have come out a different day.”

But true to tradition, Owen Daniel Foucher beat the odds with just 38 minutes before March 2.

Family and friends couldn’t believe a third March 1 birthday had joined the family, Foucher said.

Even Womens Center nurses stopped by after the delivery to see if what they heard was true.

“The whole hospital was calling us the March 1 family,” he said.

Now the family is at home in Port Orchard, trying to get used to the rigors of a feeding schedule and sleep times. Come March 1 next year, though, there will be a grand party – a grand party times three.

“We’re all going to celebrate together,” Elliot said.
