Accident leads to 4-hour wait on Highway 3

Southbound Highway 3 came to a standstill between Gorst and Bremerton Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle accident left drivers trapped on the road for almost four hours.

The crash was reported at 1:13 p.m. after a fully loaded garbage truck tipped over due to a flat tire while driving south on Highway 3 near Windy Point. The crash blocked one lane of traffic, but both southbound lanes were shut down by the Washington State Patrol as two tow trucks arrived.

The driver of the Waste Management truck was seen exiting the vehicle with minor injuries and received help from bystanders.

Rush-hour commuters were trapped on the road. Multiple people could be seen exiting their vehicles just to move around and pass the time.

Those in the front of the line were subjected to rank smells after liquid from the tens of thousands of pounds of garbage seeped onto the highway.

State trooper Katerine Weatherwax reported that both lanes of the road were reopened at 5:09 p.m., hours after the truck was brought back upright and slowly moved off-scene.
