Adult charged for threatening witness in Smiley case

Sebastian Khalil Carroll, 19, was arrested at the Bremerton Department of Corrections Office Sept. 10. He is being held on $100,000 bail and escape from community custody.

PORT ORCHARD — A transient man was charged for making threats to a witness involved in the case against Matthew Allen Smiley on Sept. 10.

Sebastian Khalil Carroll, 19, was arrested at the Bremerton Department of Corrections Office Sept. 10. He is being held on $100,000 bail and escape from community custody.

Carroll is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 11 at 8 a.m.

The sheriff’s department was notified of alleged threats to harm witnesses in the case against Smiley. Smiley was charged with felony harassment for “making threats to kill,” Sept. 9.

The alleged threats to witnesses were made over Facebook chats via instant messaging, according to a statement of probable cause from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department. The chats began with a juvenile known to Smiley. Though the juvenile told sheriff’s detectives the juvenile had no intention of doing anything, the person did warn a witness “you need to watch out Monday at school,” according to the statement.

Based on the comments made on Facebook, detectives found there was “obvious intimidation to try and scare the witnesses in this ongoing investigation.”

The juvenile told a detective the post on Facebook was made to find out who “told on” Matthew Smiley, according to the statement. The juvenile alleged Carroll made a comment on the post that he was going to hunt the witness down and hurt him, according to the statement.

Carroll told detectives he spoke with the juvenile who posted the Facebook message several times over the phone and via social media, according to the statement. When a detective asked Carroll about the comments he made regarding wanting to hurt the witness, Carroll confirmed he made those comments and said he “hates snitches,” according to the statement.

Carroll allegedly said “snitches deserve to get their asses whooped, not dead though.” He allegedly said someone from his “crew” will get the witnesses.

Carroll is considered homeless. He is a registered level 1 sex offender, convicted of first-degree child molestation in 2012.

Carroll was one of four arrested Sept. 9 for felony harassment and/or intimidating witnesses.
