She was born Alicia González Martínez on April 24, 1924 to José Antonio González and Maria Elena Martínez, in Bogotá, Colombia. She lived in Bogotá into her adult life with her parents and eight siblings. She worked as a buyer for her father’s clothing store and then for nine years as social secretary for the U.S. Naval Mission in Bogotá. There, she met and married an American serviceman and the love of her life, Donald Weedin. They married at her family home in Bogotá on Dec. 26, 1958.
Alicia moved to the United States in 1962 when Don was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. After a few years there, they made their home in Oak Harbor for 34 years.
Alicia was active for more than 30 years in her church and in charitable projects in the community. She served as president of the Alice Esterly Orthopedic Guild of Children’s Hospital in Oak Harbor for many years. After Don retired from the Oak Harbor School District in 1988, they spent the rest of their time traveling to favorite locations around Washington state and enjoying their grandchildren.
They were inseparable during their retirement years. Together, they made more than 10,000 rosaries that were distributed to Catholic missionaries and to first communicants between the two parishes they belonged to over the years.
Alicia and Don moved to Poulsbo in 2003 to be closer to their grandchildren.
Alicia was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 2011; her parents; and three brothers, José Antonio (Pepe), Jaime, and Rafael.
Alicia is survived by her son, Dan Weedin (Barbara) of Poulsbo; granddaughters, Mindy Weedin and Kelli Weedin, also of Poulsbo; sisters, Lolo, Helena, Clara (Hernando), Lucia, and Consuelo of Colombia; stepchildren, Leslie Weedin (Karen) of Charlestown, Indiana, Kathy Vuckel (Jim) of Moses Lake, and Rita Paradise of Tacoma; and many nephews and nieces around the globe.
