It was with considerable interest that I read Charlie Bermant’s July 17 article concerning the annexation of McCormick Woods into the city of Port Orchard (“McCormick Woods now part of Port Orchard”).

It’s an idea whose time certainly has come, and as a matter of fact, is about 10 years overdue.

Especially fascinating to me was the statement that the annexation effort began in the last few weeks of the term of former mayor Kim Abel.

Really? That was quite a surprise to me, and I’m sure to a number of other people, because if I remember correctly, the sitting city council and mayor of the late 1990s and early 2000s attempted to annex McCormick Woods.

It was my understanding back then that the purpose behind extending Port Orchard’s water and sewer lines to McCormick Woods was not only because it was needed but also that the area would eventually be annexed into the city limits.

The idea, however, wasn’t popular with then-South Kitsap County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido, who, from what I was told, fought to prevent the annexation.

I also understand that she and Abel are close friends. (Beside the point and probably not important — but it could be).

I’m now wondering if I imagined all of those conversations my husband, former mayor Jay Weatherill, and I had regarding the issue of the annexation. But I don’t really think so. I’m getting older, but I’m not yet senile.

It’s just another case of some people in this town never being willing to give credit exactly where it is indeed due.
