Appletree Cove soil undergoes tests

KINGSTON — Biologists with Grette and Associates test soil in Appletree Cove Feb. 25 for the Port of Kingston. The cove will be dredged in July. The Army Corps of Engineers requires testing before the dredge to see if the soil is contaminated. If the soil is clean, the port will be able to dispose of the sediment at an in-water dump site— a much less expensive process.

The biologists bore 15 feet below the soil’s surface in five different locations outside the boat launch and around the docks, where the dredge will take place.

Port Manager Kori Henry said they don’t think any contaminants will be found, as there has never been an industrial site along the cove, but the sediment released from the Carpenter Creek / South Kingston Road bridge project is a bit of an unknown.

Henry said she expects the results in two weeks.
