First, Port of Kingston officials hoped the tide would take the carcass away. Then, they towed it to a buoy and tied it there to keep it from returning to the beach.

Sheriff’s deputies were enlisted to help; they shot at the carcass, hoping to make it sink. Now, port employees have weighted the carcass down with chains and cinder blocks, hoping to send it to the bottom of the Sound.

Call it the saga of the Cow That Wouldn’t Sink (or, the Carcass That Wouldn’t Go Away). At least officials didn’t try dynamite. That’s what Oregon Department of Transportation officials used in 1970 to remove a whale carcass from a beach. Watch the video to see what happened.
