South Kitsap School District’s Back to School Celebration returns for an 11th year in a new location.
Because Kitsap Bank Stadium at South Kitsap High School is closed during the summer as construction crews install artificial turf and resurface the track at the facility, the Back to School Celebration has moved to Marcus Whitman Junior High.
Michelle Reid, SKSD superintendent, said the school, which will host the event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15, was selected after a committee she assembled felt it provided “the most centralized location.” She said Marcus Whitman also was selected based on its parking availability, access to storage and restrooms.
The event will be structured similar to previous years. One difference, according to SKSD spokeswoman Amy Miller, is that free immunizations will not be provided this year. Miller said information on where families can obtain free or inexpensive vaccinations will be provided at the Back to School Celebration.
About 6,000 people attended in 2014. This year’s event will include free haircuts, dental checkups and immunizations, along with vendors, activities and live entertainment.
Vendors tents will include preschools, daycares, colleges, dance studios, and sports groups and organizations. The high school’s JROTC and marching band, The Dance Gallery and Just for Kicks will be among some of the entertainment, along with a dunk tank provided by Heritage Foursquare Church.
“If you are new to the community and you come to the event, not only do you get a glimpse of what the school staff looks like, you get to meet your principal,” Miller said. “And maybe throw a ball and dunk the principal while you’re there.”
SKSD teachers will attend booths and tables to talk with parents and students about the upcoming school year. Several businesses and churches will be on hand passing out free school supplies and bags.
The district also will have informational booths about programs it offers.
The Back to School Celebration began in 2005 with 200 participants at the high school. It has attracted more than 5,000 people several times in recent years. Reid said the event fits within the district’s “Whole Child” philosophy. Dave LaRose, who was the district’s superintendent from 2008-12, once said that philosophy aims to make each student feel safe, healthy, cared for and supported, engaged and connected, and challenged.
“I think the Back to School Celebration is one of the most amazing activities this community and school district is engaged in,” Reid said. “It’s such a positive for our children and families. I think it’s unique. I don’t think other districts are engaged in this level of support for the ‘Whole Child.’”
• SKSD officials encourage those attending the Back to School Celebration to use the free shuttle bus service. Annette Stewart, SKSD school and support specialist, said shuttle buses will run approximately every 15 minutes starting at 9 a.m. from Tractor Supply, SKHS and Orchard Heights Elementary.
