Navy College Office Bremerton’s Outreach Office in Bangor and its three resident colleges have moved to a new location in Building 1042.
Due to changes at Trident Training Facility (TTF), the Submarine Learning Center and the Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) needed to identify a new location that employees of partner academic institutions could access without security clearances.
“This move is actually a great opportunity for the outreach office at Bangor to expand our accessibility and capabilities, providing our students with easier access and more services in the new location,” said Gil Williams, director of Navy College Office Kitsap. “The new location has better parking, is much easier to locate and has street access for both sailors and their family members.”
The move includes Brandman University, Southern Illinois University and Vincennes University with their full time staff relocating to the new facility, which has new offices and a classroom.
“One of the great things this new facility will allow our partner institutions to do is implement some technology solutions being used in college campuses across the United States,” said Ernest D’Antonio, director of the Navy Voluntary Education Program. “The TTF location would not allow laptops, cell phones and PDAs for obvious reasons, but the new location will really allow our customers the flexibility they need to pursue their education using the most up-to-date tools of the trade.”
The easier access will also be a boon for the eight partner institutions that have part-time representatives on base, often visiting from other Navy College Office locations. These partners will no longer have to transport their materials and equipment through the security checkpoints, which will facilitate their outreach and marketing efforts and better support sailors at Bangor.
“While the move has happened very quickly, I could not be more satisfied with the support we’ve received from Naval Station Kitsap and the Sailors in the Pacific Northwest,” said Capt. John Newcomer, commanding officer of CPPD. “Providing our education services to the largest submarine base in the Navy is no small task, and any interruption in services impacts our Sailors and their learning.”
“The move to our new facility gives Brandman an opportunity to better serve our students, as we will be both more visible and more accessible,” said Jennifer Perryman, campus director for Brandman University at Bangor. “Our old location wasn’t the easiest to find, parking was a hassle, and there were security rules that often intimidated new students. We are excited about the prospect of having a centralized location for the Navy College office and partnership schools that allows sailors and their families to explore college options easily.”
