HANSVILLE — A couple was fortunate to discover a dangerous fan fire before it spread to the home’s attic here Sunday night.
North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were called to the Driftwood Key home just before midnight after an occupant who was awake heard a crackling sound coming from the running bathroom fan and, upon investigation, found smoke, according to district spokeswoman Michele Laboda. They called 911 and evacuated the house. Shortly thereafter, the house’s smoke alarms activated.
The first unit on scene arrived from the district’s Hansville station within seven minutes. Firefighters were able to quickly stop the potentially-dangerous smoldering fire, and additional resources coming from other areas were able to return to their stations.
Firefighters believe that the small blaze originated when the bathroom’s ventilation fan failed. The family is insured, but was not displaced by the incident which destroyed the fan and scorched less than six feet of the bathroom ceiling/attic structure, Laboda reported.
There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
